The Best Vacation Ever! Chapter 2: In Gettysburg

Due to our delays, we had to rearrange our plans in Gettysburg. We missed the big family dinner on Thursday evening; on Friday morning, George, a friend of Steve's mom, had offered to take the children fishing. We switched the fishing date to Friday night, and planned to stay through lunch on Saturday to have a meal with Steve's mom as well as his brother John and his family.

Friday afternoon we opted to go to the battlefield so that the children could climb on the rocks of Devil's Den. When I went to the battlefield as a child, climbing on those rocks was my most vivid memories. The children enjoyed it as well. (To see the historical importance of Devil's Den, go to http://www.nps.gov/archive/gett/getttour/tstops/tstd2-11.htm .Despite the heat and humidity of the day, the children enjoyed scampering around the rocks with Uncle Craig and Aunt Jan. For dinner, Steve's mom and her friend George cooked a wonderful fish fry. Then we went fishing. My experience with fishing always seems to be waiting two hours for one nibble. Not Friday night! Andrew had his first catch within five minutes... and he had two hooks on his pole and caught two fish! All in all, the children caught about 18 fish in a hour of fishing, and Andrew caught a big mouth bass (thrown back because it didn't quite measure up to the 12 inch legal limit!) They had a great time!
